A Majority Held In Restraint

I was really struck by something Chief Justice Ronald M. George of California said about the gay marriage case over there, and the question of "activist judges".

Rather than ignoring voters, "what you are doing is applying the Constitution, the ultimate expression of the people's will," George said.

Sometimes people want things they can't have, things which contradict other things that they want more (or say they do). No matter how people might feel about something when they're sitting alone with their eyes closed, it's the ideas we can write down and put under glass in the daylight that represent the better angels of our nature.

It's a very Republican idea, but then, so is Chief Justice George.
